A sheep herder near Fort Benton fell ill and was taken to St. Clare Hospital. His loyal Border Collie, Shep, followed him there, never leaving his side during those final days.
When his master passed, Shep followed the casket to the Great Northern Railway station. He watched as it was loaded onto a train heading east, his eyes never leaving until it disappeared from sight.
Every day for 5½ years, Shep greeted each arriving train, searching for his master among the passengers. Station employees cared for him as he became a beloved fixture of Fort Benton.
Having grown deaf with age, Shep didn't hear the oncoming train. His front paws on the rail, still waiting. All of Fort Benton mourned. Boy Scout Troop 47 carried his coffin to a hillside grave overlooking the town.
Shep's story of loyalty touched hearts nationwide when featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not!
Station employees and travelers alike cared for Shep, making him Fort Benton's most beloved resident.
In 1994, Bob Scriver's bronze sculpture was unveiled, showing Shep with paws on the rail, forever waiting.
Shep's collar and bowl are preserved at the Museum of the Upper Missouri, honoring his memory.
